2025 Vegetable Garden

Our 2025 vegetable garden growing season has started! On Tuesday April 1st, our Lunch Break farm manager and some of our garden volunteers planted several types of lettuce, spinach, beet, radicchio, and leek seedlings. And, peas were sowed in the center bed under two trellises. All of the crops planted were requested by the Lunch Break chefs and pantry manager.

And, if you peek out the Learning Center windows, you'll see that a brand-new 8-foot-tall deer and groundhog-proof fence and gate has been installed. The project was completed thanks to funding from Lunch Break, manpower from the Knights of Columbus Council 816, our facility manager Caesar, and a few of our garden volunteers. It was quite an ambitious project that will enable us to grow even more healthy, organic produce to feed the needy.

Advent Prayer

Dear God, our Creator,You revealed your love to us and creation once and for all through the coming of ourSavior, Jesus Christ. By the grace of Your Creator Spirit, teach us to celebrate our faithin the Incarnation that took place in creation.
Dear Jesus, Savior of creation, we ask that You may be born in us once again as weseek to cultivate hope for our common home. As Your followers, teach us to care forthe dignity of all human beings and all creation, now and in the future.
In a season too often marked by overconsumption and excess, let us give thanks andhonor the goodness of all your gifts in the natural world. Help us to contemplate themystery of creation as we celebrate the mystery of incarnation.
We pray for today’s victims of global warming, both human and nonhuman. We pray formore ambition in the energy transition, in this country and globally. We pray for ourgovernments to negotiate a global and fair phase-out of fossil fuels.
And, finally, we pray for the courage to be prophets of our time, calling upon ourleaders to bear fruits of ecological justice.Come Emmanuel! Make us ever more hopeful people for a hopeful planet. Let us bepart of Your light of hope to the world.
Amen.

Our vegetable garden is producing nicely, and this past week we donated 150 pounds of fresh produce to Lunch Break. Here is a photo of the harvest from Saturday, August 31. Our yearly total is nearing 2,000 pounds. If you would like to be part of this rewarding ministry, we work in the garden on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. We could use a few more hands to harvest and plant fall crops. If you are an inexperienced gardener, our farm manager and master gardeners are there to guide you.

Here are few photos of the latest harvest from our vegetable garden: 106 pounds of tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, beets, string beans, and peppers. All of our harvests are donated directly to Lunch Break in Red Bank. This growing season, we have donated 837.5 lbs of fresh organic produce to them. And, there are many more harvests to come. If you're interested in helping us grow and donate food for the needy, stop by the garden on Tuesday or Saturday mornings at 9:30 am.

Vegetable Garden In The News

Our vegetable garden is in the news! Starting this growing season, our vegetable garden will be managed by professional gardener Gabrielle Tanella, and the crops we grow will be donated to Lunch Break in Red Bank. The Two River Times article describes how local gardens contribute to help feed the needy citizens in our area; the Saint Anselm vegetable garden is mentioned near the end of the article.

Bishop O’Connell elected chair of the USCCB’s Committee on Catholic Education

“I am humbled by the support of my brother bishops and I hope and pray I can be of service to the Church and its educational mission.”

So said Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., upon learning that he was elected chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education Nov. 14.

According to the USCCB website, the Committee on Catholic Education “provides guidance for the educational mission of the Church in the United States in all its institutional settings. …The scope of the committee’s work includes Catholic elementary and secondary schools, Catholic colleges and universities, and college campus ministry. The committee advocates for federal public policies in education that are consistent with Catholic values and that uphold parental rights and responsibilities regarding education.”

Bishop O’Connell brings a strong background and many years of serving in the ministry of Catholic education at various levels to his new USCCB position.

Following his May 29, 1982, ordination as a priest of the Congregation of the Mission, then-Father O’Connell’s first assignment was as faculty member and director of student activities and in Archbishop Wood High School, Warminster, Pa., where he served from 1982 to 1985.

While working toward his canon law degrees, Father O'Connell also served as registrar and assistant professor of canon law, theology and philosophy in Mary Immaculate Seminary. In 1990 he joined St. John's University, Queens, N.Y., where he served in various capacities, including professor of theology and religious studies, associate dean, then academic dean of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and assistant to legal counsel. In 1994, he also spent one year simultaneously serving as interim academic vice president of Niagara University, Lewistown, N.Y.

In the spring of 1998, Father O'Connell was named the 14th president of The Catholic University of America in Washington., D.C., a position he held for 12 years before being named Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton by Pope Benedict XVI in June, 2010.

He was ordained to the episcopacy in July, 2010 and assumed the role of Ordinary later that year.

Bishop O’Connell has directed much attention to promoting and strengthening Catholic education in the Diocese of Trenton. During his tenure, the Bishop has helped to raise money with special collections for Catholic schools and students; worked to launch the Catholic Schools Have It All marketing campaign and instituted the annual Catholic Schools Mass which brings together representatives of all schools of the Diocese to celebrate with their Bishop. He also instituted the first diocesan chapter of Catholic Athletes for Christ, an organization to promote spirituality among athletes competing in the Catholic high schools of the Diocese.

Make time to watch The Letter, Laudato Si' Movement's film, in which top leaders travel to Rome to speak with Pope Francis about Laudato Si' and present how the climate crisis impacts their own lives and that of their communities.

For the first time, a film featuring Pope Francis and telling the story of how the climate crisis is affecting life on Earth will be available for free and accessible to everyone thanks to Youtube Originals.

This film is the fruit of many years of work between Laudato Si' Movement, Off the Fence, the Oscar-winning production company for My Octopus Teacher, and the Vatican.

Diocese details what Synod revealed

On June 24, 2022, Bishop O’Connell submitted the Final Report for the Diocesan Phase of the Synod, “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission,” to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The report notes that, from January through April, the Diocese conducted more than 800 group listening sessions involving nearly 4,500 people, with 64 parishes, 70 priests and 156 deacons having actively participated.
Please CLICK HERE to download a PDF copy of the report.
Thank you to the dozens of St. Anselm Parish Family members who opened their hearts to the Holy Spirit and shared their thoughts, hopes and dreams so honestly and thoroughly in this process.
